Trauma Events and PTSD

Upsetting, confusing, or life-threatening events are also called traumas. You may have experienced sexual, physical, or emotional abuse in your childhood or as an adult. Maybe you lost a loved one, endured a divorce, or suffered violence. Your sense of safety has been shaken. You notice having scary memories and reminders that haunt you in your daily life. You may feel like danger is around the corner or worry something bad will happen. Even with your best efforts in trying to avoid talking about it, the trauma still shows up in your mind and body. The lingering outcomes of trauma are heavy. You can access healing through the support of trauma therapy when these symptoms just won't go away.

Trauma reactions can also look like:

  • Nightmares

  • Panic attacks

  • Numbness / disconnected

  • Being avoidant

  • Memory loss

  • Negative beliefs

  • Irritability

  • Self-destructive behavior

Trauma Treatment

Our team of experienced and compassionate therapists are dedicated to supporting you in managing the effects of trauma and develop coping strategies to support relaxation and healing. At Gentle Guardians Counseling Center, we use EMDR, TF-CBT, DBT, mindfulness meditation, and trauma narratives to support a reduction of problematic symptoms.

Trauma therapy involves identifying your history of traumatic exposures and learning more about trauma and its outcomes on your mind, body, and behavior. Your therapist will support you in establishing safety through the therapy experience and practice ways of shifting your thoughts. Practicing relaxation techniques to calm the mind and body is crucial in managing emotional distress. Reviewing and processing the traumatic memories through therapy supports healing the mind and body and creates new associations to the events in a more adaptive and undisturbed way. Then you can use this wisdom for you benefit. This is called post-traumatic growth.

While difficult, trauma work is meaningful. You have the capacity for relief and renewal. We are here to support you on your healing journey.
